Hubpages and Immortality
74The oldest company in the world that is still operating was first created 1306 years ago in Japan, in the year 705. Just think about this for a moment. The creator of that company is still remembered by his descendants and surely that is the closest to immortality that any normal human being can hope to aspire. Jack the Ripper and Alexander the Great had their own ways and means of acquiring immortality and they don't count anyway.
Hubpages appears to be a successful enterprise and there is no reason to suppose that it shall not last for a thousand years, provided of course that we do not destroy our beautiful planet through our greed and our insanity. In consequence, all of us who write here on Hubpages for one reason or another actually have a shot at immortality. Every time we write something we reveal a piece of ourselves and we leave it here for all to see, especially for our offspring.
Can you imagine your great, great, great, great, grandchildren at infinitum reading the thoughts and cares you have expressed here generations before they were born? I find this possibility to be captivating.
Yet there are small-minded people who have actually spent time and effort putting up sites to project the opinion that Hubpages is a scam because it did not meet their expectations of making them wealthy through their literary talents. But that is a negative thought that I shall get away from forthwith.
Besides the potential of immortality, a more immediate benefit for me is the amazingly talented and/or truly kind, humane and generous people I have come to meet here. For example, because there is no justice in the world, Nellieanna Hay’s remarkable poetry will probably not be published in my lifetime, so I have already printed out her brilliant poems and told my wife that I want to be buried with them. The reason is that they are proof that even though we may be an accident of nature, we are something more than simply feeding and breeding animals. How is so much talent as Nellieanna's be possible in one human being?
Then there is the exceptional literary talent of Shadesbreath, which also reflects the man’s humanity, which gives one hope that all is not really lost. His descendants will have no doubt of their forefather’s literary talent when they read any of his stories and they will be certain of his humanity when they read his story ‘Sodomites, Vaginamites and Cockites’
In addition, my sweet friend Feline Prophet is proof that the great Gandhi came from solid stock and that he was no accident. As to kindness personified, who could be a better example than my friend Lee B? And how could I not mention sweet friends like Green Lotus, the intelligent drbj,my Internet spouse the amazingly talented Pam Roberson, my generous and gifted friend JamaGenee, the extraordinary Cris A,kindness personified VioletSun, my guilty thought Lisa Preston - and there is not enough room to mention so many others.
So how could I, or anyone else, possibly find anything to complain about Hubpages, a business which has given us a shot at immortality? Do they make money out of our little contributions? I certainly hope so!

I for one enjoy the idea of being immortal with my writing. I started a series called Big Nam, simply because my father is getting up there in years and his stories had a big impact in my life. The men mentioned in my series are gone now, so who else is there to tell their stories but us younger generations. I have seen people's claims that HP is a scam, and I think it is because of their failures that they want to place the blame on someone else. I hope HP sticks around for a long, long time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. :)
You're Greek and a god, why worry? You're immortal since you rose from the foam. What? That was Aphrodite?
Thanks for the mention btw, I now only read hubs that feed my ego. :D
HubPages Memo:
Date:Sol 14th 1,000,000,000 APF (After Pink Floyd);
Payment:Dimitris Mita in the amount of *1,000,000,000,000 NanoBot Credits.
We have time....
My ears were ringing, so I thought I'd come by and see what's up! :D
I do love that idea of immortality. In fact, your idea gives me one, that I will give back to you to host if it amuses you. How about a De Greek's "Letter to my great, great, great, great grandson contest." You could collect them all, and put a voting poll at the end or something. Or have a judging panel that picks ten, and then have a poll. Or just have people write them. Or maybe suggest HP host it.
Anyway, I do ramble. I love your idea, I totally agree about Nellieanna's remarkable talent. Thanks for the props, and here's to living on forever through our prose!
Dimitris! With such a tribute as that, I would hardly ever need another mention or shot at immortality! You're a precious friend and the composition of your hub is something to behold! Your list of worthy hubbers is wonderful, too.
If my poetry is to be buried with you, 1) that means you've read it - hallelujah! and 2) I hope that won't happen till many decades in the future! For one thing, I'm going to be around and writing for several more decades at least & will need your encouragement! (2 And for another, my mind is boggled to think my poetry will make it to the Greek islands with you - and beyond! wow! That's what I call immortality of a high order! I love it!
I can't agree more that it is a pity that there are folks whose perception and vision goes only to the end of their fingertips, enough to criticize and complain about the entity which offers them a fantastic opportunity to try their hands at writing and sharing it with intelligent readers who take time to give praise where deserved (even for the effort!) and occasionally to offer valuable criticism. I still think about your caution to me early on that my prose hubs were often too lengthy. Not that I always heed it, but I do check the word count and think about that! Thank you! It was done in a caring, gentle way which gave me nothing but help and attention!
May I share my Christmas greeting with you?

I hope yours and Natalie's is a wonderful Christmas and New Year, dear Dimitris!
ps - thanks for the link to Shades' hilarious hub! That is priceless!
Thank you for including me. :) I hardly write nowadays in Hubpages but have nothing but good to say about this site, and will always come back. I formed many friendships here, and learned to write better, so I am thankful for the opportunity given.
I agree Nellianna is talented! She is not only a poet but an artist, and can easily publish a book of her poetry.
YOU are too kind to mention me in such exalted company! Yes, I agree, Hubpages is a little bit of immortality. It's also given me a chance to communicate with people like you and Nellianna whom I never would have had a chance to know. That really makes it meaningful to me.
I have always been immortal, but with hubpages someone else will know that! Neat idea.
Thank you, Dimitris. For me, to know that people whom I actually know enjoy it means more than "once-removed" appreciation of faceless unknown people. It is quite personal to me, much of it written in private for private reasons just for myself. No thought or intention of achieving fame had anything to do with it. But since I've shared it on hubpages with folks I know and can "meet" first-hand here, the horizon has broadened to include a bigger still private and personal audience. Still is a BIG step for me. And you were quite literally my first encounter here with meeting someone who responded to it, expanded that horizon and encouraged me to venture forth. It was a heady experience! :-) Thank you.
I'm honored and overwhelmed by the kind comments about me and my work right here on your hub! Thank all of you!
And I so agree with Austinstar that personal Immortality is in progress. For me it is The Eternal Now. The sharing of it expands that awareness. Hubpages is a great arena for that to occur!
What you say is very true, and you should be near the head of the queue, when it comes to immortality. Nobody can really expect to make a fortune on HubPages, but it is a perfect forum to recieve appreciation, from some very talented individuals, and a great place for being able to read some of the most exciting writers on the internet today.
Thanks for that. Have a great New Year.
DG, thank you sooo much for mentioning me in the same hub as the truly gifted Nellieanna. I certainly don't expect you to take any of MY pennings to your grave, but it does give me a tingle that you might someday be reading them in sunny Greece!
As for the letter to a however-many-greats-grandchild, I won't be writing such a letter, either. Like you, everything a descendant of mine will ever need to know about me can be found in my hubs, in my comments on the hubs of others, or at my blog.
A very Merry Christmas to you and yours! ;D
You are so generous! Hugs. . . (*(*(DG)*)*)
yes it truly is scary writing from the heart since you are as you rightly say always baring a part of yourself and letting it merge with the collective consciousness.I am forever flirting with the banal since i a deadly scared of what people will think when they really really see me.So i guess mortality is my fate but well, I realize i do not have the guts to take a shot at immortality so this will have to do.Goof one Dimitri.
as for the connection between Feline and Gandhi- welll , errrrrrr , i meaan - hic to that!!
Thanks for the mention, dimi. Intelligent? Now I really will have to concentrate more on my spellink and grammer.
And thanks, too, for reminding me of the possibility of immortality - through writing hubs, that is. Intriguing thought!
Happiest of holidays to you and your family.
Hope you don't mind, DeGreek - I just quoted you from this hub on my new hub about Mass Destraction! This is just too quoteable...
You have given me a wonderful Christmas gift with your mention. I am humbled and delighted! A recently departed (no not dead) hubber onced asked her readers what we each would put into a personal time capsule. Really, what is more fitting than our own collection of HP writings? EVen if HP disappears, the Internet is notoriously famous for retaining just about everything, everywhere. Cheers!
Very interesting thoughts and ideas. Well done.
Your thoughts, ideas, kindness and writings will be eternal and always in my heart. I love you, friend.
Lisa
Hi De Greek, I was casually flitting through the Hub Feed when a hub entitled 'Hubpages and Immorality' caught my eye. I thought, 'hey, this might be entertaining' and quickly clicked on the link, only to discover that my eyes were playing tricks on me. It wasn't immorality, it was immortality! I've yet to do anything immoral on HubPages, but as to HubPages immortalising my words, well only time will tell. It's quite a notion!
Brother De Greek, I just left my last goodbye to our mutual friend Cris A in his poem- Sinner, the moment I read your note for me, the last comment he made in which is only few days ago. So sad, we lost a friend in Cris. I still believe that immortality applies here at HubPages. Cris' poems and writings here will be immortalized, his legacy leaves on and on!
...and I stand corrected here please- "Cris' poems and writings here will be immortalized, his legacy LIVES on and on!" DG, you're one hubber with a heart! You're a great friend of everybody here. Hugs? hahaha!

Your words are going to enthrall generations for sure, DG...and thanks to you they may even stumble on some of our ramblings! :)
