Why You Should Never Marry a Greek
86
One of the most well known Greeks of modern times was Aristotelis (Telis) Onassis, a multi millionaire ship owner also known as the husband of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Those of a certain age will certainly know of him, the younger ones should look him up. Like all Greeks, he used to love visiting the innumerable out of the way, cheap, local bouzouki tavernas with their very own special character that you find only in Greece.
If you are to understand this story, it is important to comprehend the Greek mentality somewhat, so to this end I make specific reference to uncommitted inmates of this institution, who I understand to include Pam Roberson, JamaGenee, Gypsy Willow, lisadpreston, msorensson, Nellieanna, ladyjane1, SilverGenes and Zsuzsy Bee.
.
And what better way to illustrate a point, than with an Israeli TV advertisement:
.
.
Just kidding!
The reality may or may not be somewhat different and you can judge it for yourself in the following video and if you think that this is a set up, you have another thing coming, you poor fish:
.
.
So naturally, I wouldn’t blame you if you thought that this is extreme. Now in order to better understand my story, it’s important to understand why we break plates. It is impossible for a foreigner to understand and foreigners think that we do it for the noise, or for some long forgotten ancient tradition. Wrong. We are the only race which literally destroys money to show that we are having fun. I have seen people actually setting a match to and burning note currency. My friend Dean used to have a bottle of whisky burned by the waiters in the middle of the dance floor when a particularly pretty girl was singing and which he set his sights on. At $100 a bottle (at the time) he was telling her, look, I don’t give a shit about money and all I care about is you.
Plate breaking in public places has become illegal in Greece so people throw flowers, which serve the same purpose, as they are sold at exorbitant prices in these tavernas for obvious reasons. For example, some years ago I was in Athens for a shipping exhibition and because I had signed a very important contract at the time, I spent three days at the Romeo Taverna (and you should visit it if you find yourself in Athens). It cost me a total of $16,000 and the food and drink could not have been more than $3,000. The rest was thrown away in flowers.
.
.
So back to our story. Onassis goes to one of these taveras and has a good time, just like everyone else. At some stage, he has to go to the loo and as he is washing his hands, this working man goes up to him and says to him
“Mr. Onassis, please help me out here, I am desperate. I am here with the love of my life and I am about to propose to her tonight. I need to impress her, so as you come out would you please pass by my table and just say ‘good evening George’ to me? It would impress her no end and I shall be eternally grateful to you”.
Onassis agreed, the working man goes back to his table and Onassis comes out of the toilet a few minutes later. He looks around, finds the table where George is sitting and goes over to him and being in a good mood decides to really ham it up.
“George, my old friend, how are you?” he says. “Where did you disappear to? I haven’t seen you for some time and why you don’t you return my calls?”
George turns to him and casually says
“Aris, if I told you once, I told you a hundred times not to interrupt me when I am with a woman!”
.

The above video is for the benefit of married/partnered members of this asylum like _cheryl_ , Joy At Home, sunflowerbucky, Green Lotus, Lee B, Feline Prophet,Shalini Kagal, akirchner, katiem2, VioletSun, who may think that maturity is any guarantee of sane behaviour in the Greek person of either sex.
Most foreigners know the Syrtaki dance, because of the film Zorbas the Greek, but the most personal dance for us Greeks is the Zeimbekiko, which a man will dance alone and out of respect others will leave the dance floor to him and simply kneel around him clapping to the tune, in a tradition that goes back to the times when the original creators of the dance would pick a fight with anyone who was rude enough to get in their way during dancing. Nowadays, women also dance this primarily male dance and there are times when a group of friends may all share the dance floor.
For lorlie6and dianacharles who liked my friend Dean in the story about Gay Roosters, this is the dance that Dean liked on the very rare occasions that he danced.
.
.
And if you think that that is difficult, you are right. So what happens when you are too drunk to be that athletic? It is the emotion you FEEL that counts.
.
As for the men, if you think that women have more sense than men, then think again. I would strongly urge young Cris A to think twice about getting involved with a Greek woman. Naturally tonymac04, sabu singh and saddlerider1 have already gone down the drain and nothing will save them, so what's done is done and it cannot get any worse, so jump in whenever the opportunity arises and the devil take all our problems.
.
What kind of nutcases would name a dance after their butchers? Hasapiko (Buchers’ dance) is named in honour of that glorious profession and it later developed into the well known Syrtaki, or Zorbas’ Dance for the tourists. .
Hasapiko (Buchers Dance)
.
Finally, it would be indelicate to ignore the traditionalists and the tourists, so here is the well known scene from the film, Zorba the Greek.
The story was written by a brilliant author and a true Greek, Nicos Kazantzakis, who knew the Greek mentality like no other and what the actors are discussing is the fact that they have just lost everything and they are ruined financially.
When Zorbas says “I never loved a man more than you” it is the confidence of the true male in his sexuality that allows him to say that comfortably, without fear of it being taken otherwise than it is intended.
..
Conclusion
So, fellow inmates, listen to the voice of mature male wisdom and just stay away from Greeks. If you don’t, you may or may not die happy, but you shall certainly die poor.

Ooooh I want so much to be a bad girl..I would be more fun and attractive that way..lol.
Beware Greeks bearing...flowers?? I like the way you mention other hubbers in your hubs!
I'd like to say the Greek tradition is to dance into Heaven with a pure heart and empty pockets:)
All that sexy greek music is very arousing (no, I don't mean rousing)....I've been bitten before by a greek man and now I'm happily married to a British man (looks like Anthony Hopkins). A shame about those health and safety officials banning plate smashing - at least the Greeks do it when they are happy unlike the some British men! Enjoyed your story very much. Juliette.
What a wonderful Hub De Greek and thank you for the mention. I have always been attracted to men of Mediterranean persuasion, so your advice has fallen on deaf ears. I, for one remember Ari Onassis well as the Paparazzi covered him (and Jackie) ad nauseum. I was also required to take Greek dancing in High School as part of physical education. They believed anything more strenuous could be life threatening. This Hub feels like memory lane to me, De Greek. I even saw Anthony Quinn on Broadway as Zorba! A big Opa to you today.
I had soooooo much fun in Greece!
Of course I enjoyed this read - and I enjoyed dancing on a ship on its way to an Island. I often travel alone because I have the time and the adventurous spirit, I am also a much older woman, and I cannot tell you how well I was treated whether I was walking through Athens, shown around the area filled with artists, in a market, hotel, restaurant - or cafe where I enjoyed great coffee, and on different Islands. And I loved all the tributes to goddesses!!!
I would Looooove to marry a handsome, high-energy, dancing, life-loving Greek man! What I love most about Greece is that it is Greece with all its architecture, history, language - and wow did I see a lot of tall handsome men - all with a smile.
Thanks for such a fun hub early in the morning here in New York City!
Carolyn (Whew!)
Hi Dimitiris, just enjoyed yet another fun hub. The Israeli video was hilarious, no heimlich manouevre there (sp?) I went to Greece when plate smshing was legal and boy was it fun. Keep em coming!
The Israeli ad video caught my eye - so cute with the puppies. (of various species) The hub was most enjoyable. I've never been to Greece - or any Mediterranean country - but always wanted to! I have a thing for Greek food (what I know of it) and the dancing is entrancing. Love the economy of movement and yet so very sensuous! Anthony Quinn is from Mexico, of course - and it has been known as a very high-energy, full-bodied country too! I may just send you a DVD of a movie I'm very fond of in which his verve sets the pace. He does not cross over into another ethos in it.
As for marriage -- not sure I'd want to embark - but one never knows... ;) And why not a steamy Greek, if the occasion arose? A girl could do worse! :)
Thanks for a lovely early morning romp!! I loved it!
This is a fun way to start a Friday and yes, I loved the Israeli commercial! The others just forgot to mention how good it was... :-)
Many years ago, while sharing a house with other young people, we created a plate smashing area in the basement (concrete works instantly against china) but instead of smashing things for joy, we started smashing things to relieve whatever stress and angst (like who didn't call etc) but every time it turned to laughter. It seemed we rarely smashed things alone so we ended up having to go shopping for things to break!
As for remembering Ari, of course I do. That was a very sweet and funny story.
Yet another great adventure you've taken us readers on. Thank you for once again letting us live and laugh vicariously through your adventures and knowledge!
these puppies - I found it on one of the "others" on your featured u-tubes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hqjii3C39GI&feature
Of course the Greek dance could have been learned by any actor - but some would carry it off with more authenticity than others. For years I thought AQ was Greek. LOL. Of course - I didn't have your first-hand perspective to judge it by and I hadn't read the book. Now I think I must read it! I know how you respect the essence of a story - and surely of a dance as well. Suffice it to say - each of us has a closer knowledge and "feel" of our own environs than others do. It's ok. This kind of wonderful interaction does bring us closer and brings a closer understanding of one another and our commonalities as well as our differences! And - viva la difference! ;)
Thanks again!
Clearly, my position on marriage is 180 from jumping into it! haha But thanks for your expert opinion.
But, De Greek, I've been hopelessly in love with a Greek for 22 years now! What to do?? His ancestors hailed from Tripoli-the site of an old mental institution-and I can say with certainty that the Kutsoginis clan is a tad touched.
Loved the hub, my friend, bookmarked and rated up! I appreciate the mention, dear sir.
I should start breaking things as a sign of not giving a crap and showing off. Such fun! Oh but wait, alas I cannot as I am not Greek. :-(
Ah DG - but I DO dance - I'm Irish! ;-)
DG - Of course, m'dear - I didn't think you were or would be. No need to be sorry about it.
I simply stumbled into that site among the others in the numbered series at the bottom of one of the utubes you posted. I clicked it on out of curiosity becausae it seemed so out of place with the tasteful Greek dances. I told you about it in reply to your question. And the puppy was cute - but for me, not cute enough to kiss on the lips. Shudder.
De Greek - ????? ? ????????? ??? ??????? ????? ??? ????????? ???????????? ??? ?????????. ?????? ??? ??? ??????? ???? ?????.
And the videos were great, too, especially the Israeli ad which fit in so appropriately. Thanks for this marvelous hub.
De Greek my fellow street fighter and lover of music, fine wine, food and the beauty and scent of a woman. Thank you for the salutations of my departure down the drain of holy matrimony:0) I agree I will dance with out care and hopefully someone will throw something at me as sweet as roses. The plates are for eating from not tossing like frizbees at a man who is upright and frolicking on the dance floor or on top of tables:0) I leave you with the haunting words of your great Socrates. " Life unexamined is not worth living" he also said Greeks examined life by participating; anyone who did not was an idiotes so the modern word idiot was derived. I am fully in agreement with Socrates, one must examine life totally and I love that the Greeks examine it without care in their dance... They can't be all that bad the Greek inventiveness transmuted the Phoenician aleph and beth into the alpha and beta that gave us our alphabet. Here rose the concepts of law and government that rule our lives today, thoughts that enrich our minds, beliefs that inspire our souls. The Greeks began our literature, sports, medicine, street plans of our cities, the architecture of our public buildings, the logic, geometry, engineering and science that have transformed the very world we live in...so the Greeks have something to dance about...bring it on DG..loved every minute of it and I to am one of your many loyal followers. p.s. and I love Greek Salads, feta cheese..yummy.
Ahhhh De Greek, Modesty is the color of virtue.
Calumny is only the noise of madmen.
The art of being a slave is to rule one's master.
Wise leaders generally have wise counselors because it takes a wise person themselves to distinguish them.
Peace:)
Who's dancing, I must have missed that, where's the dancing...
Just noticed that the editors at HP edited out the comments I had made above which raved about your hub in Greek. I laboriously translated about 20 words. Now all there is are question marks. But so you will know, it was definitely up and amusing and fun to read.
Greek weddings look like fun...messy but fun! :)
This was so fun to watch and read, LOL! I think its cool to break plates and dance, and be happy and unihibited while having a great time. My sister has a love affair with the Greek culture, she even wrote a cookbook that focuses on Greek cuisine. Her lifelong dream was to visit Greece and she did about 4 years ago with her Greek friend, and she says, she had tears of joy when she was in Athens. She loved the people, the food, the warmth and passion of the Greeks!
I rated your hub as awesome and funny. Going to finish watching the videos, they are fun!
LOL! Thanks for the mention. Guess maturity goes out of the window when having fun Greek style! :) And the olive commercial was hilarious!
You become poor when you marry and even poorer when you divorce. And who said love doesn't cost a thing? Certainly not in Greece! :D
Have you seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding?
I must say that Dean's choice of dances is my favorite-the fifth one from the top, in black and white. That guy is fabulously hot and has moves I'd love to see up close and quite personal!
Reaction? You bet-my dear Greek man will benefit from these videos, I'm sure he'll thank you! :)
Ohh, you mean you Greeks chuck things around on a regular basis? :D
Not to marry a Greek becuz they throw plates and dancing ?
Once you're married throwing plates at your hubby should be a choice every woman should have, regardless of nationality.
Now that said I think I'm going to request when I'm reincarnated to come back as a fun loving Greek.(as long as it's not me, who has to keep cleaning up after all the fun)
The Israeli ad is a hoot, but as far as your Aris joke..., I'm sure you've told better ones....
What a great, fun hub. I loved all the videos. A great starter for the day (which is going to go down hill, as I have to clean out the chicken coop.... but maybe I practice my Zorba dance out there and imagine Anthony Quinn's coming to help me with the wheel barrel)
Your hub as always a pleasure to read
hope you're well
kindest regards Zsuzsy
I disagree, I may be quite drained but I am not yet flushed down the toilet bowl of life, still have some fight left in these old bones:0) As for Aris, I think he should have in good gesture, paid for the whole evening, plates and all and threw in a cruise on one of his many ships he owned. I loved the story you mentioned above about painting the bunnies name on the side of one of the ships you managed, now that would have been a Hoot, her looking out the window and seeing her name on the side of that ship. I sure hope it was all worth it for you, did she do the bunny hop all over you and tickle your fancy with her fluffy white tail? hah
Oh, dear: This reminds me of the most passionate short lived romance of my life when I learned all about the Greek ways of being most eccentric in treating women and life in general. All your comments and videos are bringing back pleasant memories of the young Adonis from Cyprus that swiped me off my feet.
Of course I noticed the Aristotle joke but it wasn't brand new to me - though it's funny still. With all the plates and colorful exciting dances though it totally paled in comparison!
Would it have mattered an iota if I'd mentioned the Aristotle joke? Seems the only thing mentioned in responses to all my comments have been to an inadvertent remark made about a cute puppy in which I made no mention of the bimbo playing with it, but which has dominated every reply to my subsequent comments attempting to assure that you're not held in the least accountable for the contents of that little incidental utube flick at the bottom among the series about the dancing. I honestly thought that was the ad you'd asked for opinions about, besides and looked no further for the ad! So - where was that ad, by the way? Have I missed the best item?
So enjoyed this! There's obviously something very wonderful about being Greek that I truly envy.
Many years ago I taught Greek mythology to 8th graders and had students do a presentation about whatever they wanted, just as long as it had something to with mythology. I had a Greek student, and though he and his parents were born in the U.S., he was very into being Greek--and that's what his presentation was about. He was frustrated because he didn't get much of a reaction from his classmates. At the end of his talk, he sort of slapped himself on the chest and said,"You don't understand. I am Greek, I feel these things deeply!" That's a pretty risky statement for a 13 year old boy. Anyway, I wish now I'd known enough to break some plates.
Lee - what a caring idea to have wished you'd done! He would surely have felt that deeply too!! But perhaps he sensed your empathy anyway. Anyone with such deep feelings as that boy can surely sense beneath the surfaces!!
I love Greeks because they are passionate people - much as the Italians. I have often been accused of being many nationalities and it is only by proxy. I am really Danish and German with some English thrown in but on any given day I can become Jewish - I should branch out and try Greek. Any of the passionate people, I would fit right in. I am totally flattered that I am one of the chosen in being mentioned and thank you! As usual your writing delights and makes me crack up because you do know how to tell a story and you do know people!
Did she lose it? I mean her job :D
Haha what a flirt! Check your email :D
Our swimming pool is wonderful! I spent part of the afternoon in it, working on my tan. And then the grandkids came over, and the peace and quiet ended! lol
Such fun! All those plates and flowers too? Sounds like a riot so maybe marry 'em, have fun and leave 'em would be a better idea, De Greek?
Now I might be mistaken but wasn't this whole hub about why NOT to marry a Greek... and here you're asking me to do just that.
I agree with Zsuzsy! Greeks are so SEXY! All the dancing and plate throwing, turning tables over then dancing on them...I can barely get through this comment! :)
So what have you destroyed for me De Greek? I'll have you know that I set a bottle of Boone's Farm on fire last night for you. Yep. Then I threw paper plates all over my neighbor's yard and had to hide in the bushes for half the night. What I won't do for love.
I'm coming back later to watch these videos again. Wonderful job! Funny, interesting, sexy, entertaining...all my favorite things. :)
I too am not over the hill by any means! Just so you know! And I love almost anything Greek except that stuff they drink that tastes like turps (no offence!). When I was in about Grade 9 or 10 (and don't ask when that was) the English teacher we had was a rather dashing guy who had served in the RAF during the War and we had a lot of fun in his classes as he always had interesting anecdotes to enliven the books we were supposed to be reading, dull stuff like Vaity Fair. Anyway one thing he said that stuck in my mind (funny that, I guess it just shows how small my mind is! LOL!) was that the most beautiful and sexiest women in the world are blond Greek women. He said they're rare but the best! Can you corroborate this interesting titbit of useless (or is it useless?) information?
And one of the first DVDs I bought when I got a DVD player was Zorba. I just love that movie and the book, which I have read a few times.
Maybe I should do like Martyn and move to Greece?
Thanks for a truly super Hub.
Love and peace
Tony
Martyn is fellow-Hubber Sufidreamer. And he's already been in Greece quite a while! I called him Martyn because that's his real name and I couldn't at that moment remember his HubPages moniker! The problem of age, I think!
Sorry to hear about your narrow escape with your wife! Must have been rough!
I'm not that into blonds myself also preferring the darker looks of the Mediter - now how do you spell that again? What was I saying?
Oh what the heck - it's way past my bedtime and I can't think any more!
Love and peace
Tony
Fascinating! Striking music, amazing dancing. I love the dance you said your friend Dean prefers. Great hub, DeGreek!
Stop with the comments De Greek and write some more hubs!
I planned to travel in Greece the year when war started in Croatia, and unfortunately never went there. Well, part of my secret dreams about Greece was that I would be able to smash as much plates as I can buy (in wild dance, of course)... Ahhh...it is so pitty it is forbidden.
Mediterranean temper is not the same in all Mediterranean countries - Croats smash plates (men AND women) only when angry, and NEVER in public, LOL.
Excellent Hub, DG, thumbs up.
Rich in love, though, and what better way to die!? Life is way too short to think of all other things as being more important than nonsense!
Bravo De Greek! How many wealthy wished for more gold and more stress with their last breath! . . . ;-) Flowers for EVERYONE!!
Very passionate, Love the dance and being so free. life is great enjoy it while you can. Thanks for the great hub.
Hmmmmmm, I've never dated a Greek but now I'm intrigued. I'm a very passionate and free spirited gal so I just might seek out a Greek man and see where it takes us. I do love the food! Peace and Love, Katie
Just had to come back for another dose of punishment! Watching that vid of the lovely blond lady got me to thinking if she can move like that on the dance floor, imagine what she could ... oh well, I'll leave the ending of that thought to you! The vids are super, thanks again.
Love and peace
Tony
Ha ha ha excellent Hub my friend. I'm from Hellas and i really enjoy your storie. Thanks
There are many places, in island's mainly, that is not illegal to smush plates...
If you plan again visit to Greece take a look at the following Hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/Live-your-myth-in-Greek-is
Take care or GIA MAS...
Let me get things straight. You're Greek, you're telling us to stay away from Greeks and you're trying to convince us by posting these wonderful videos? Go figure. Oh, and one last thing: The Greek culture is AMAZING, so you better not believe otherwise! Enough said :)
Ha ha ha again...
I love your English way... Thanks again
All buttons UP...
I just had to come back here and enjoy the vids and your witty words again.
Be well, my friend.
Love and peace
Tony
De Greek, your way of presenting ''the greek way of life'' has nothing to do with the reality!....you present greek culture as a very easy-going ,entertaining and ''mindless'' culture that focuses only on joy and on how to have a good time.Things are completely different.GREEKS are very down-to-earth people who work a lot and live more stressful lives than their fathers. Young greek people, study a lot, work a lot and generally there is no much time for us to live the way of life you present.YOU PRESENT A STEREOTYPE--not the reality. I could say that most foreigners dream of a ''greek life'' that would contain greek food, bouzoukia, dancing, happy people, sun, sea etc.....but LIFE IS NOT GREEK anymore,.....make a walk in Athens to find out how stressful people have become.Lastly,i cant figure out why you re saying that somebody should not mary a greek person. well,i didnt see any serious arguments about that!
Just stopped by to say Hi :)
....hey come on! we still have humour!...
and i have to admit that western people[the so called europeans] also have an incredible sense of humour!
They have humour when they say to us to sell some of our ancient monuments or some of our islands to pay back our debt to the german banks....
They have a lot of humouur when they call us ''lazy southerners'' or '' p.i.g.s.'' that went bankrupt
They are very humorous when they borrowed us money at rate of 6% and this is called ''european solidarity''.
They are very humorous when they depict in their magazines santorini with a turkish flag on a greek church!
They were also very humorous when they gave kosovo to islamist albanians and bombed Belgrade, calling it ''humanitarioan operation''
.......we still have humour,no wonder why it is ...black humour....
kisses from Athens
I've been married to a Greek for 28 yrs now and have enjoyed every dance along the way! xaxa

Hello, De Greek,
I have not gone to your posts for a while, I do read them when you publish, but have not had the chance to leave any comments.
I loved that book Zorba the Greek! I thought he was you personified, only under an alias and oh married to the beautiful woman.
That was very kind of Ari to do this for the man. Thank you for sharing that.
I will go to the videos later.
